Dariye Calls for Restraint as Protests Spread, Urging Peace and Security in Plateau, Nigeria*

Former Governor of Plateau State, Senator Joshua Chibi Dariye, has appealed to Nigerians to reconsider their position on the nationwide protest, which commenced on August 1, 2024, and is expected to last for 10 days. Dariye's plea comes amidst growing concerns about violence and criminal elements hijacking the demonstrations, resulting in vandalism and looting of property belonging to innocent citizens and the government.
In a statement to newsmen, Senator Dariye emphasized the importance of prioritizing citizens' safety and the peace and security of the nation. He acknowledged the right to peaceful protest and genuine agitation, as provided for by the Constitution, but cautioned against allowing the protests to take on a different dimension that could compromise national unity and peace.
Dariye expressed concern that the protests, initially aimed at driving home demands on the government, are being exploited by criminal elements to perpetrate violence and loot assets. He called on the government, employers of labor, and elected/appointed officials to develop deliberate policies, programs, and activities that would have a direct impact on the people and the nation at large.
The Senator's appeal comes as some leaders call for caution, while others support the protests, highlighting the complex views on the demonstrations.
